What is Solution-Focused?


The Solution-Focused approach is basically a simple and effective approach to a positive outcome.

A Proven and Effective Approach

The Solution-Focused approach has roots in therapy from about 50 years ago, while coaching has a history of around 25 years. Initially developed for therapy and counseling, this approach transitioned into coaching, bringing with it a foundation of scientific validation and research.


Focuses on “Above the Line” Conversations

This approach emphasizes positive, proactive, and constructive dialogue. It aims to find solutions, foster collaboration, and encourage growth, rather than dwelling on problems, blame, or negative aspects.


A Faster Path to Desired Outcomes

The approach emphasizes learning from past successes. This doesn’t mean we overlook weaknesses—we acknowledge them—but we don’t dwell on them. By focusing on strengths and solutions, we can reach the desired outcomes more quickly.

What Solution-Focused looks like


When people come to us with a situation or even a problem, the typical response as leaders or managers is to take a diagnostic approach. We often ask questions like, “What’s the problem? How long has this been happening? What do you think caused it?” This method aims to find the root cause before finding a solution. However, the solution-focused approach takes a different perspective. Instead of dwelling on the problem itself, we recognize that clients have often already analyzed the problem on their own.


A solution-focused coach shifts the conversation from problem-focused to solution-oriented. Rather than saying, "Tell me more," which invites more discussion about the problem and can leave clients feeling drained and frustrated, the coach asks, "How do you want things to be different?" This allows the client to articulate their desired future, moving from a place of "this is what I don't want" to "this is what I do want."


For example, a traditional approach might ask, "What is stopping you from taking action?" In contrast, a solution-focused coach might ask, "What would give you more confidence to take the next step?"


This subtle shift encourages clients to think positively and constructively about their path forward, helping them build their own solutions and feel more empowered to act.
